Spider-Man’s cinematic history is a troubled one. On many occasions, the studio’s demands did not match the director’s vision. When the studio won those battles, it was the audience that ultimately lost. The studio forced Venom into Spider-Man 3. Then they hastily rushed to create a cinematic universe. But after a deal between Sony and Marvel, we learned about Spider-Man’s entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Thing About Reboots
The thought of another reboot had some fans uneasy. Many did not feel the first reboot was necessary. When Sony announced it back in 2010, fans wanted a fourth Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire film instead. Despite fans’ desires, Sony hired Marc Webb to direct and cast Andrew Garfield as the web slinging hero.
The Amazing Spider-Man garnered a divided but mostly positive reaction from fans. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone brought their characters to life with excellent performances and on-screen chemistry. The story mostly retold the origin story with slight changes. Despite these changes, many felt the film revisited too much of the story from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, was a failure not even web-shooters could hold together. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone still carry the film with their exceptional performances, but the film suffered from having too many characters, a poorly developed plot, and unnecessary set-ups for future films.
But could a MCU Spider-Man film be better? Spider-Man: Homecoming answered that question with a resounding, “YES!” The film’s fun and inspiring story fit perfectly into the MCU. While it made slight changes to the source material, it kept true to the important aspects. Tom Holland provides an excellent performance as Peter Parker, who longs to do more with his spider-powered life. Yet he still feels held back by the adults above him. It’s a feeling many of us felt growing up.
I believe Spider-Man: Homecoming is the best Spider-Man film to date. To display this, I’ve analyzed a scene that demonstrates how it captures and understands the character of Spider-Man better than the previous films. You can see it now in this new video series, “The Scenic Route.”
